How structural engineering fees are scoped
Why project complexity, existing information, access and coordination requirements matter more than floor area alone.

Start with the decision
Begin with the result you need: a design package for an alteration, a report on a specific concern, or advice before choosing a layout. Give the engineer your postcode, proposed work, available drawings and intended programme. A useful fee proposal relates to that brief. A headline price alone does not tell you whether two quotations cover the same work, or whether either includes the information your architect, contractor or project team expects.
Keep the scope proportionate
Compare the deliverables line by line. Ask whether the price includes a visit, calculations, structural drawings, design coordination and responses to review comments. Confirm the number of design options or revisions allowed for, and what happens if the proposed layout changes. Ask for VAT and any separate charges to be stated clearly. Where existing information is incomplete, identify what needs checking before a final scope can be agreed, instead of treating an initial allowance as a final price.
Turn information into action
A fixed fee should have a defined scope and a clear process for agreeing additional work. Before appointing, ask for the assumptions, exclusions, payment stages and proposed delivery programme in writing.
