CALCULATIONS AND DRAWINGS
Structural calculations vs drawings: what is the difference?
A plain-English guide to structural calculations and drawings: what each document explains, how they work together and what to ask for in your project scope.

Start with the decision
Structural calculations explain the engineering checks behind a design. Structural drawings communicate the arrangement and details that need to be coordinated and built. They serve different purposes, and many projects need both. A calculation package might assess a beam and its supports, while the associated drawing identifies where that beam belongs and how it relates to the surrounding structure. Architectural drawings describe the wider proposal, but they should not be assumed to contain every structural detail. At Hey Structure, we encourage homeowners to ask what information is needed for their next decision rather than requesting a document by name alone. If you are seeking builder quotations, for example, explain that purpose at the outset so the proposed scope can address the information the contractor needs.
Keep the scope proportionate
A useful package makes its assumptions clear. Existing construction is not always fully visible, and the design may depend on information that must be confirmed. The documents should be read together, including notes, references and revision details. A beam label on a drawing may refer to a calculation, schedule or separate detail. A calculation on its own should not be treated as a complete set of installation instructions. Equally, a layout drawing is not evidence that every structural check has been completed. Ask the project team which documents cover the permanent structure, connections, supporting construction and any further specialist design. Fabrication information and temporary support arrangements may sit in separate appointments. Understanding those interfaces early helps prevent a missing piece of information becoming a last-minute site query.
Turn information into action
When requesting a quotation, describe the proposed work and list the information you already have. Ask whether the fee includes calculations, drawings, details, revisions and responses to review comments, and what falls outside the appointment. Agree who will submit documents to the relevant approval body and who will distribute the current set to the builder. Sending calculations is not, by itself, confirmation that permission to proceed has been obtained. Keep superseded versions clearly separate. If a wall position, opening width or other design assumption changes, send that change back to the engineer rather than altering a drawing on site. Hey Structure can help define the required structural package from your project brief. Share your postcode and proposed work through our enquiry form, with plans or photographs if available.
